You can fold a wired Porta Pro and put it away between listening sessions. You still have to find a place where you want to use it. Before ordering, write down your usual listening spot and the device you take there. Those two details will tell you more about this purchase than its retro appearance.

This is a source-based buying guide. MP3Raid has not physically tested the headphones. The details below come from Koss’s product and support pages; the buying questions are ours.

Can I use it in a noisy place?

Koss calls the Porta Pro family’s cushions open-air and says they let surrounding sound through. So the room remains part of what you hear. If you want to block a train carriage’s noise, put isolation or active noise cancellation on your shortlist instead.

Consider two possible uses. At home, you may want to hear someone call your name while music is playing. On your commute, you may be trying to get away from conversations. Which of those is closer to your reason for buying headphones? Hearing some surroundings is not a guarantee of safety outside.

There is also the person sitting next to you. When you have a pair to try, ask them what they can hear while you listen at your usual level. We haven’t measured leakage for the Porta Pro, so we cannot tell you that a particular seat or volume will work.

My phone has no headphone socket. What else do I need?

You get a 3.5 mm plug on a four-foot cable, according to Koss’s wired model listing. Look at your device before adding the headphones to a basket. With a headphone socket, you have the relevant connection. With only USB-C, you need a compatible adapter providing a headphone output.

That adapter is part of the purchase, even if its box is sold separately. Read the adapter’s device compatibility information, including your phone model, before ordering. Our USB-C DAC guide explains the conversion happening inside this sort of accessory.

The same Koss listing gives the impedance as 60 ohms and sensitivity as 101 dB SPL per milliwatt. Read both when considering an amplifier. There is no need to order one purely because “60 ohms” appears on the page; start by trying the headphones with a compatible output. Can you reach a comfortable level, and is there an audible problem? When you can hear comfortably and aren’t noticing a problem, you have a reason to leave that setup as it is. We haven’t checked your phone and headphone combination.

Can I tell whether the pads will feel comfortable?

The foam cushions, adjustable headband and folding frame are described on Koss’s product page. The Black version’s description also names adjustable temporal pads intended to reduce pressure on the ears. The photograph shows the wired Porta Pro mechanism, but a clear product picture cannot answer a fit question.

Try it with the things you normally wear. If you wear glasses, leave them on as you adjust the band. Where does the pad press against your ear or the arm of the glasses? Spend a little time with that fit before deciding to keep the pair, and stay within the seller’s return conditions. You can also fold it carefully and try the storage space you intend to use. These checks are suggestions for inspecting your own pair, not results from an MP3Raid trial.

How much am I really spending?

The US Koss listing showed $49.99 before shipping on October 13, 2026. As an example, add a hypothetical $12 adapter and the subtotal becomes $61.99. The amount at checkout will also include whatever delivery charges and tax apply to you. We chose $12 only to show how an adapter changes the calculation; it is not a price quote.

There is a similar detail in the warranty return instructions. In the US, Koss currently asks customers to include $9 for return shipping and handling. For a purchase elsewhere, look at your local dealer’s terms. Keep those costs in mind when you read “limited lifetime” on the box.

Once you have a suitable listening place, the right connection and a fit you can live with, you can decide what the Porta Pro is worth to you. Resolve those questions before buying accessories to solve a problem you haven’t found.
