Fifteen points for one service, fifteen for the other. Our worked example ends in a tie until the listener gives offline preparation more importance. Then the totals become seventeen and sixteen. The feature lists have not changed; the job the listener needs has.
That is a better starting point for comparing Spotify and Apple Music than counting every option as equally useful. Try the services on your own equipment and favourite releases, with priorities chosen before you begin. The figures below illustrate the method; they are not MP3Raid test scores for either company.
Choose five jobs, then weight them
Use weights from one to three. Three means essential, two important and one optional. Score each attempted job from zero to two: unsuccessful, workable or straightforward. Multiplying those two numbers makes an essential job worth up to six points and an optional one up to two.
| Job | Example weight | Hypothetical A result | Hypothetical B result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play on your regular equipment | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| Find unfamiliar music you want to revisit | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| Prepare music for a journey | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Find a particular album edition | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Save and retrieve favourites | 1 | 1 | 2 |
For A, the sum is 6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 15. For B, it is 3 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 15. The maximum with these weights is 20.
Raise the journey weight from two to three and A gains two points while B gains one. The new totals are 17 and 16, out of 22. Use that change only if the priority really fits your routine, rather than adjusting weights until a preferred brand wins.
Keep a note behind each score
A number needs an observation. For equipment playback, name the phone, speaker or receiver and record what worked. For offline preparation, download a small selection on the device you will carry and open it without internet access. Our offline guide sets out the separate checks.
For an album edition, inspect the track list instead of accepting the first matching title. For discovery, record music you actually want to revisit, rather than counting recommendations. A service may suggest many songs without answering your particular search.
Check quality in the interface you use
Spotify's quality documentation distinguishes the web player from its applications. Apple's lossless instructions distinguish devices and output requirements. Compare your actual arrangement, not two headline specifications detached from it.
The Spotify chain worksheet and Apple Music setup guide help identify the relevant case before you buy an accessory.
Put the real cost beside the shortlist
Check the current price in your country for the required plan. Keep an introductory offer separate from the continuing price and note when renewal begins. The example points above do not include subscription cost or make a universal value claim.
A one-point lead is a prompt to inspect the deciding job, rather than a scientific verdict. If that job matters every day, the difference may be useful. If it barely matters, revise the priority honestly and try another ordinary session.
