Audacious 4.6.2 fixes a specific internet-radio problem: selecting entries in StreamTuner should respond again. The October 19 release notes also say the Scrobbler and StreamTuner plugins now honour proxy settings. For affected listeners, those details are more useful than a general promise of better playback.
There is a catch for Windows users. When checked on October 27, the official download page identifies 4.6.2 as the current stable source release but says its Windows version is coming soon. The listed Windows ZIP and installer are still 4.6.1. Downloading the available stable Windows installer therefore does not establish that you have the radio fix.
This is an analysis of the developers’ release notes and packages, not an MP3Raid hands-on review. The cover shows an archive Audacious 4.5 Qt interface, rather than a test of the new release.
Match the package to the promise
The source distribution has separate Audacious and plugin archives. The project says the main package is installed before the plugins when building from source. Its ready-made Windows downloads include the plugins already. Those are different installation routes, so there is no reason to give every reader the same build instructions.
On Linux, the official page points to distribution repositories and warns that their packages can be older. Check the version your own repository provides. A new upstream release date doesn’t update every distribution at once. The page also directs macOS users to Homebrew.
For a Windows installation still on 4.6.1, keep that version difference in your troubleshooting notes. Don’t repeatedly reinstall the same package expecting a patch that its version number does not include.
Separate a failed selection from a dead stream
A station that never starts can fail at several points. The patch notes let us distinguish some of them:
- If choosing a StreamTuner entry produces no response, the selection fix is directly relevant. That is the behaviour the developers name.
- If the application needs a configured proxy, the proxy-handling correction is another detail to check. It does not promise to change your network’s access rules.
- If a station’s address has disappeared or its server is unavailable, neither statement proves that the station will return. Try a currently working address before blaming the entire player.
The release also adds support for the MPRIS OpenUri method, a separate way for compatible software to hand a location to the player. It is not an announcement of a new music catalogue or a subscription service.
Some headline features arrived earlier
The 4.6 announcement from May 31 introduced the File Browser plugin and brought Playback History to GTK. Those features should not be presented as inventions of the October patch.
Version 4.6.2 instead adds smaller changes, including more Qt Winamp skin controls, SID-file seeking and keyboard navigation through toolbar buttons. Its bug list also names PipeWire and Wayland fixes. Each has a stated scope; a Linux-specific fix is not evidence of a Windows improvement.
If your interest is managing local music rather than repairing radio playback, our Strawberry player guide offers a separate comparison point. Choose the feature you need, then verify the package that actually contains it.
